The Truth About Labor Day

As Labor Day approaches and families set off for their last summer weekend, Clean Response wants to reflect on the history of this significant day. We also offer a special thank you to the Clean Response team that continues to work hard on water damage, fire damage and other disasters every day.

In the late 1800s during the midst of the Industrial Revolution, Americans were working 12-plus hours, seven days a week. The working conditions were poor, and children as young as 5 were required to work in the factories. These circumstances, along with insufficient wages, led to poverty and unsanitary health conditions.

When the manufacturing industry began to develop, the labor union began advocating against these poor hours, wages, and working conditions. In 1882, over 10,000 labor workers took an unpaid day to protest against New York’s city hall. The event was referred to as the Labor Day parade, which sparked the creation of a paid holiday celebrating the work of our labor men and women. In 1894, Labor Day became a recognized federal day for every worker.

Labor Day is a holiday to commemorate the hard work of those who have come before us and the continuous efforts of the American people. We hope you enjoy the holiday weekend filled with family, memories, and celebration. While Clean Response will be closed to honor the holiday, our 24/7 emergency water and fire damage restoration services are still available. Our team will be on the job if you need us.
